Building an Access Control System

Big scale project
In 2017 I had the opportunity to work for one of the biggest banks in Brazil to design their web based access control system used to manage the security of over 4.000 branches throughout the country.
Me and a multidisciplinary team of 5 very talented professionals were stationed in the bank’s Research and Development (RnD) department for about a year.

Design process
We started by doing a workshop together with the bank’s security staff to define the core product needs. After this discovery phase, we created a Proof of Concept (PoC) to showcase the ideas of how we were going to address the main challenges we found during the discovery workshop.

With our solution ideas approved by the bank’s security manager, we created an MVP with the system’s most basic features and did the first test runs directly with our final users in real life context.
The tests helped us to learn about important technical issues and about the user’s interaction patterns, which enabled us to iterate the system’s efficiency and it’s user experience.

In the next few months we successfully addressed the biggest technical challenges that showed up during the system’s implementation and were able to deliver efficient solutions with great use experience that encompassed the product’s core needs and other more specific use cases.

The future
The following steps after the consolidation of the system’s general structure was to expand it to manage access to areas with tighter security protocols and adapt it to work safely on mobile devices.
